WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE HUNTING DOG

My personal favorite hunting dog is the German Shorthaired Pointer. They are the most versatile breed in my opinion their style and grace are topped by none in my opinion. The only con I could ever complain about is the hyper fits of non stop energy. I operate a small kennel in Illinois and have a great success. I breed for results not $. The dog below is Rooster my male.

What is your angle on this thread with it being your first? We have a thread for hunting dogs. I find it curious you have a kennel in Illinois but are in Atlanta. But I'll play this game. English Labrador. Has everything. Looks, brains, drive and an on/off switch.

Oh, this is an easy one for me. It’s the one in my avatar, a Jack Russell Terrier. If I were still a quail hunter it would be an English Pointer, if I still duck hunted, a Lab, but these days a blood trailer is all I need and he fills the bill.

I think the best one's for us have been lab/bird dog mixes. The "bird dog" half has been shorthairs, pointers, etc. A dog doesn't have to hold a great point as long as it works close and gets "birdie". Retrieving is more important to us than pointing.

Jack Russell’s
Beagles

And I’d like to get a Jagdterrier. They are some pretty righteous little dogs.

I’d argue that the German wirehair is more versatile than a gsp. Especially a Deutsch Drahthaar which has stronger lines than the German Wirehair IMO. But life’s too short to hung with ugly dogs so Vizsla it is. Pic taken today.

Y'all might laugh, but my Collie while I was growing up was the Best Overall Hunting Dog I've ever seen.

He would hunt Rabbits, Ringnecks, Grouse, Tree Squirels, Tree 'Coons at night, Groundhogs (he would find them and keep them busy until his Mom would show up, then he'd go silent and let them focus on her while he snuck up on them from behind) and was just the Best Buddy a Kid could ever have.

Don't have a Hunting Dog today, but a Beagle-Shitzu Mix is my Best Buddy now.

Mitch I’ve been meaning to ask how your Vizsla is doing?

She has been great! They didn’t lie when they said Vizslas are full of energy! She loves her weekends back at camp where she has free range and runs all over. Haven’t worked with her as much as I would have liked to, but she definitely had a nose and and pointed a few birds as well! Our problem is we just don’t have many birds, going next weekend 2 hours away just to get a few to continue to work with her.

I understand, short of preserves we have almost no wild birds where I am. One thing that helped me out was I found there were people around me selling quail eggs. Apparently they’re the new superfood and are supposed to help people with allergies. Anyway the people were raising coturnix quail and were hatching chicks to grow their flock. I got the males for free but volunteered to pay $3/bird so they would raise them up for me a bit and hold them. They have a reputation of not being good flyers but I thought they did fine. They flushed excellent, then flew for usually a hundred yards. If the dog was loose and chasing by about the third flush they were out of steam and he’d catch them. But on a check cord working to steady a dog they worked good and gave me the opportunity to work him when I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. The trainers used Huns mostly but they’re expensive around here.

Proud dog dad here! Finally got some birds off a local guy a few weeks ago. A plus on her first time with live birds.

Better to have a good cattle/sheep working dog like this Australian Shepherd ,so chores get done faster leaving more time to hunt. And she finds a deer or shed just fine. Too bad she passed in 2019 at age of 14. Have eyes open for another good one.

Mt Cur for me. The huntingest animal I have ever seen. I have had labs, beagles, gsp, english pointer, english setter, a variety of hounds, beagles, bassetts, aussies, wiener dogs, chessies, and maybe some more.

These dogs are loyal to the family like none I have seen, either. They make a great guard dog for someone who lives in the middle of no where like I do, but once you get them away from home, they are not protective. Doesnt mind getting in water while hunting, but not a real swimmer. I hunt mine for squirrels and coons - but he would hunt bigfoot if the opportunity arose
