Goldenrod?

reminds me of ironweed
Iron weed and Jerusalem Artichoke look really similar.
I have both, but I've never seen I W as thick as the OP photo, and IW, IME, tends to prefer a little sun. I don't find it in deep shade.
BTW, my deer like to browse IW in later summer. I don't mind having it, but I do mind having Artichoke...the stuff is useless and it spreads. I don't like the stuff.

Right now it’s confined to a pretty small area that was a food plot in years past (not mine). I’ll turn this area into a clover plot or rye grass camp site eventually.

Crownbeard. It looks like golden rod from a distance. Up close the flowers look like a daisy. The stuff loves any partially shaded area.

Could also be wingstem, I guess. Also known as yellow ironweed. One has alternate leaves, one has opposite. Can't remember which goes with which. But the stem looks the same on both.
What we call ironweed has purple flowers.

I took some pics of Jerusalem Artichoke growing on the edge of my yard.
The tell tale characteristic of JA is the ridges that form along the stem of mature plants. The ridges don't appear on young plants.
I can't really see the stems on the OP pics, but it sure looks like JA to me...same serrated leaf shape, same colonization habit, growing thick and tall in deep shade...looks a lot like the JA that I'm trying to eradicate.

Certainly possible, looks very similar to ironweed and wingstem. Probably one of those three.

The OP needs to post some pics in flower stage.
I don't know anything about wingstem, but just doesn't quite look like Ironweed to me...some better close up pics would be helpful.
Btw, my deer browse iron weed quite a bit. They don't touch artichoke.
Oops, you ARE the OP...lost track, sorry. Duh :)

So the million dollar question. What's the best time to spray whatever this is? Can it be controlled with Gly or do I need something fancy? I'm not even sure this specific plant was out of the ground at all the first week in May (see picture). Late starter but pretty much takes over this little area once it gets going.

I also need to get a plan together to replace it with some other ground cover. This area is currently serving as our camp site, definitely don't want to spend hours with the trimmer in here every time I camp.

Weekender, looks like my Ironweed. that grows just like that in partial shade. Deer love to bed in it and I've walked up on them within a few feet before they bolt. Stays strong until mid-late Nov then snows beat it down. Drives coyotes crazy. I personally keep it going.

If its artichoke, I haven't had good luck with gly. I've had as good as can be expected results with Clopyralid3, which I bought for canada thistle. IME, Artichoke is difficult to eradicate. It will take some diligence to get it under control. I really can't say exactly when the best time is to spray artichoke...either late spring after plants have emerged or just before flower stage?? I'm not sure. I kill it when time allows me to get to it.
I have never tried to kill iron weed...my deer like it so I encourage it.

Tap, you absolutely sure that's JA?? JA has a very hairy stem. Also all the lower leaves on a JA are opposite and become alternate as you get near top. Yank one of them up and check for a tuber.

I determined that it was JA by the yellow flowers. Is it possible that I misidentified it? I guess I need to look for tubers. This stuff doesn't pull easily...tough roots.
I do know that this problem plant is not iron weed. I have a little iron weed on my place, so I know this is a different plant.

Yeah, Tap, I think you also have wingstem there. It also has yellow flowers, similar to both crownbeard and JA.
True ironweeds have purple flowers. Regionally, some might refer to wingstem as ironweed or yellow ironweed but it is not an ironweed. The only two plants I know of that have that winged stem are crownbeard (verbisina occidentalis) and wingstem(verbisina alterniflora). Both have yellow daisy-like flowers similar to wild sunflowers which JA actually is.. Confusing, I know.....
